River
Erosion by the Meghna
Hasan
Mahmud, Bhola, 05 April: The Meghna has recently become a curse to the
islanders. Erosion by the river of Meghna has already made thousands of people homeless
as well as shelterless in five upazilas of Bhola district. Though the river of Meghna
is a source of earning for the fishermen of the islanders, it appears to be a
curse to the islanders during monsoon.
Torrential
rain of the last few days along with river water has affected some villages
seriously. The worst affected areas are D. Khan, Shibpur, Dhania, Mirzakalu
etc. Vast tracts of cultivable land, houses, educational institutions, cyclone
shelters, mosques, and temples, local markets have already been washed away by
the eroding river of Meghna, rendering thousands of people homeless.
As a result, many
families are now living under the open sky on the nearby embankments. They are
suffering from hunger and diseases. Now the river-stricken people need
immediate relief assistance and shelter so that they can survive. The
government should take up schemes to protect some of the areas from the greedy
clutches of the river of Meghna.
