Earthquake
Hits Dhaka and Neighboring Areas
Hasan
Mahmud, Dhaka, 05 April: A moderate earthquake struck Dhaka and some
neighboring areas at 9 pm yesterday, causing power cuts and damage to buildings
but no causalities. The tremor was measured 6.8 on the Richter scale. "There
has been damage to power, gas, and water supplies, and there has been disrupted
phone contact," said Reza Khan, a spokesman for the National Earthquake Monitoring
Center. "We have been informed that one building has collapsed in Dhaka,
but it has also been confirmed that there was nobody in the building, and there
were no reports of any injuries."
Meanwhile, the
frightening people came out to the street right after the shock. A Dhaka
University student named Masud Ahmed broke his leg after he jumped from a floor
of his dormitory, being panicked by the earthquake. At least 20 Dhaka
University students were treated for injuries after they jumped out of their
dormitories in panic. Some of the panic-stricken students described it as a
series of sharp shocks with roaring sound. Our local correspondent said that
shocks were also felt in Gazipur, Tangail, Mymensingh, Narsingdi, and Pabna.
