Celebration
of Pahela Baishakh

Mahmud, Dhaka, 15 April: 'Baishakh' is the first month of Bangla year and
'Pahela Baishakh' is the first day of it. So, it bears a great significance to all
people of the country. It is celebrated with traditional festivity as a part of
our national culture. The day is a public holiday. Different socio-cultural organizations
organized different programmes across the country yesterday to celebrate the
day.
The day's
first program was held at dawn at Ramna Batamul. The rural people also celebrated
the day with great enthusiasm. They made many kinds of cakes in home. They wore
new dress and attended the local fair. Girls wore yellow sarees and boys wore
pajamas and punjabis. In keeping with the age-old tradition, traders and
shopkeepers opened 'Halkhata' and offered sweets to their customers and
clients.
The
people in big cities brought out colourful procession wearing masks. Baishakhi
Melas were the great attraction of the day and they were held at different
places of the country. Some people ate watered rice with green chili and hilsha
fish on the day. The day reflected our age-old tradition and culture.
