Report - Increasing of Land Grabbing in Dhaka City

Illegal Grabbing of Rivers and Canals

Hasan Mahmud, Dhaka, 05 April: Land grabbing has been a great problem in Dhaka city and its adjacent areas. Since the land of this city and its adjacent areas is highly precious, some powerful people are involved in this malpractice. These so-called powerful people have political link.

It is known that some developers and housing companies are also involved in land grabbing. They manage government officials and prepare false papers and documents of the land and grab it. In some cases the common people are also driven away from their parental land.

These land grabbers are also grabbing rivers and canals unabatedly. Most of the areas of rivers in Dhaka city have already gone into the grasp of the land grabbers. They are filling up rivers unabated every day. Such activities are creating hindrance to the free movement of water transports. Besides, the navigation of these rivers is being affected seriously.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority should take effective steps against the malpractice of grabbing lands. Laws should be strictly implemented to save water lands of Dhaka and its adjacent areas.
